What the client needed

Daavid Adler’s story is the story of a self-professed “magazine junkie.” His story talks about the move many publishers have gone through — the move from multiple print magazines to digital only — then what influenced his move back to print in connection with a new initiative for event organizers and promoters. The original ask for the piece was for lots of pictures of David speaking, influencing, etc. Unfortunately what was supplied didn’t make the editor’s cut and with a looming deadline we needed to move the story to a later issue and get a serious photoshoot done or take the photos we had and make them into a useful solution.

My part of the project

The supplied photos weren’t bad, but since the commitment of Pages was to push in the direction of the unique and excellent in everything the decision was to not use them. However, as I looked at what we had, I noticed that Mr. Adler has a very engaging face. Decided to take a chance and I pitched and received approval for was a series of caricatures. Because of the approaching deadline, I basically got around doing full length caricatures by just repeating the body shape and worked different heads

Practical Innovation
Magazine publishing today means multi-channel publishing — events, websites, email, mobile apps, and the list goes on. There are near endless possibilities — yet, no road map. Publishers still search for the ever-better models that will engage and satisfy readers while generating a return on the investment.
And that’s the focus of this issue: practitioners who are helping to chart the course. Bibiana Campos Seijo and her team at Chemical & Engineering News have designed a metered paywall that effectively intrigues online readers and leads them into the parent association’s
member pipeline.
David Adler, CEO at BizBash, relaunched his print magazine with ample experimentation, so his innovative team can discover what works. Among their projects: an elegant application of augmented reality.
Magazine veteran Tony Silber takes a close look at Boston University’s legendary magazine, Bostonia, and how its team is leveraging the nature and capabilities of each of its platforms, print and online. The magazine’s digital experience is immersive, interactive, and, truly, amazing.
And podcast expert Chris Blose offers sound advice on starting this digital product — yet another genuine opportunity.
The wisdom each story offers is from hard-won experience, and is well worth your attention. Enjoy~
